My name is Maria Fabregui. I startedimg_0047 this blog in the hopes of showing people that there is a lot more to homelessness than just being on the streets. Growing up I always saw people on the streets but never really understood how people became homeless. I looked at the term ‘homelessness’ as a lot of people in our society do: people with no homes, living on the streets. I don’t think I truly realized the homeless problem in Toronto until I started University in 2012 and saw too many people out in the streets asking for money or just sitting on the ground with the few belongings they had.

Fast forward three years in 2015 where I enrolled in ‘Homelessnes in Canadian Society,’  when I realized how I had been looking at the term homelessness all wrong. The most important concepts I have learned so far is the difference between ‘houselesness’ and ‘homelessness.’ This vital understanding of these terms have allowed me to further understand how invisible homelessness can be. Not in terms of people who are houseless being ignored by society, but in terms of people who are ‘at risk of being homeless.’

This blog has been created in hopes of not only educating individuals about the risk factors that lead to homelessness, but helping bring a different kind of light to the invisible definition of homelessness.
